Music Ministry at Saint Joseph has as its purpose the goal of leading the assembly to “full, conscious, and active participation” (SC 10) in the liturgy through the leadership of well-prepared musical ensembles, cantors, instrumentalists, and through music choices that preserve the sacred music tradition of the church as well as incorporate new works being composed today.
Saint Joseph Church offers many opportunities to those called to the ministry to participate in the musical life of the parish. We invite you to contact us to find out how you can become involved in music ministry.
The Liturgical Choir
The Liturgical Choir prepares music for liturgy from a wide variety of genres. Membership is open to those eighteen years of age and up. The ability to read music is desired but not required. A brief audition with the music director to determine voice placement in the group is required. The Liturgical Choir rehearses weekly.
Throughout the course of the year, opportunities arise to participate in seasonal choirs such at the Advent-Christmas Choir, Lent-Easter Choir, and in small ensembles exist. Please check bulletin announcements.
Children’s Choir Program
The Children’s Choir Program at Saint Joseph is loosely based upon the Royal School of Church Music and emphasizes singing skills, music reading skills, liturgical formation, cooperation within a musical ensemble, and leadership.
Rejoice! is the development children’s choir and is for children aged four through the second grade. This group rehearses for thirty minutes per week and sings at Mass once per month beginning at the Christmas Eve liturgy.
Saint Cecilia Choir welcomes children third through the eight grade. This choir rehearses once per week for one hour, learning music from a variety of genres. Cantor ministry membership is available to choristers who qualify.
The cantor’s role is to animate the song of the assembly at all liturgies in the parish. Minimum requirements for our cantors include having the ability to read music, have a true singing voice, and have the ability to proclaim God’s word. An audition with the music director is required. Cantors have the option to rehearse weekly to take advantage of the special training that is provided.
The NoonGroup is a contemporary ensemble consisting of singers and instrumentalists and leads music at the 12:00 Mass on Sundays. All are welcome to join – adults and youth. If you are an instrumentalist or singer, especially if you are in high school, we would love for you to join us!
The Resurrection Choir provides support for the assembly at funeral liturgies. The ability to read music is preferred, but is not required. The choir rehearses forty-five minutes prior to the liturgies.
Music Group For The Mass In Spanish
Musicians for the Mass in Spanish celebrated on Saturday evenings are always welcome. The only requirement is a firm commitment to music ministry. Please contact Lucas Horta, director, after Mass for more information.
Saint Joseph Instrumentalists
We welcome instrumentalists to play in our liturgies. Guitarists, C and Bb instrumentalists, in particular, are being sought. Additionally, we are also forming a brass ensemble to play for special feasts during the course of the liturgical year to enhance the liturgy and enable the assembly to participate more fully.
